Troll 2 Recap

Recap 3 Comments

We had a great showing last night at The Anchor. Folks from all over Wichita came out to be entertained by Troll2, but ended up getting an education on the negative effects of being a vegetarian. Primarily that you’re more likely to be Goblin food than a omnivore.

If you attended the screening, or if you’ve already seen the film, we’d love your reflections on what else the film is trying to teach us. We won’t choose which of the many symbols to focus on – the popcorn, the clover-leaf birthmarks or the curdled milk are all ripe for analysis.

If you need a refresher, you can view the full-length movie at Hulu.com, once they overcome their server issues.

To encourage feedback, our favorite commenter will win a double-decker bologna sandwich at our next screening.

Analyze away!

Despite its many flaws, I found “Troll 2” to be an uplifting spirited film about a boy’s (I’ll call him Ginger) journey to vegetarian hell.

With no emotional support from his parents or sister, Ginger seeks out his dead grandpa’s advice after the family packs up for a vacation, to where they think to be a farming town.

They soon realize, but only after Ginger baptizes their dinner with bodily fluids; that the town is ran by Vegetarian Goblins.

With sausage, pork, bologna and ribs on Ginger’s mind, he sets out to annihilate anything that steps in his way (this includes using a Molotov cocktail with grandpa to incinerate the local alpha vegetarian).

With borderline sexual implications and scenes that involve somewhat of a soft-core sploshing, the metaphors are infinite. I found the use of corn on the cob butter flying into popcorn, represented the nature of Ginger on his quest for manhood and/or the Rock of Truth.

While ripping off several movies/TV programs, I still appreciated the films raw forms of acting and camera work.

Examples I noted from other movies/TV:

The Princess Bride” — First scene of Troll 2 uses the ol’ grandpa reading a story to his grandson trick (i.e. Colombo and Fred Savage in “The Princess Bride”)

Children of the Corn” – Troll 2 uses a town called “Nilbog”, or Goblin backwards, as the main spot where the fury is unleashed, while “Children of the Corn” took place in the town “Gatlin” (similar enough). Both plots read the same…family stuck in a Midwest town with no chance for survival from the crazies.

You Can’t Do That on Television” – I mean, REALLY?! Green slimy food and drinks. Totally ripping off Nickelodeon’s Canadian show…Not to mention “Ghost Busters” or Bill Cosby’s Jell-O and pudding commercials.

Overall, I’d have to rate this film at 4.5 stars on a scale from 1–5
(5 being “Hurts So Good” worthy).

    Oh-so horribly entertaining.

Not as quotable as I would have liked for a bad movie. I give it 2 out of 6 GERR!! growles “I MUST DO IT!”

I was pleasantly surprised by the general “entertainment-ness” of Troll 2.

    Evil goblin vegetarians?

Green goopy delicious-looking food and treats?

    Cakes that say “Eat me!”?

    Corn!?!

Yes. Yes. Yes. And OMG YES!

Troll 2 gets a 4 out of 5 stars from me. If we would have thrown spoons, I would have awarded that extra star…
